US Open golf 2022: second round – live! | US Open

MJ Daffue sends a hot second into the thick rough on the back of the par-five 8th. That leaves a tricky downhill pitch, which sends him over the hole, his ball perhaps a revolution from falling off the false front and many yards down the fairway. He stops just in time. Two careful putts and he runs away with par.

Sam Burns sends his shot on the short par-four fifth into a thick fescue on a bank to the right of the green. It also has a bunker to navigate, but a lot of green to play on. He lobs five feet high, which is nothing short of miraculous from where he was standing, and then calmly hits the birdie putt in the center of the cup. His third bird of the day, and he suddenly becomes a serious part of the conversation at -2.

…so maybe Adam Hadwin’s pair of street fights in 10 were the harbinger of a rough day. He drives his tee shot on the short 11 to the heart of the green, but rolls an exciting shot downhill 20 feet six feet beyond and can’t make the comeback. Suddenly, debutant MJ Daffue has a three shot lead at the US Open!

-6: Dafu (7)
3: Hadwin (2*), Tarren, Lingmerth, McIlroy, Dahmen
-2: Hovland (4*), Fitzpatrick (3*), D Johnson (3*), Buckley, NeSmith, Harman, Wise

Tell who is full of confidence: MJ Daffue, that’s who! The 33-year-old South African, playing in his first major championship, falls short by 7 and his ball rolls back down the false front. But he kicks anyway and sends a monster from right to left into the cup! He raises a finger triumphantly to the sky, then clenches his fist, and you’d have a good chance of this state of affairs yesterday morning!

-6: Dafu (7)
-4: Hadwin (1*)

Overnight leader Adam Hadwin is away from home. A trip down the middle of the 10. Then an approach stopped on the uncomfortable sand of the green. Suddenly, a JT-style explosion seems like a possibility. But with a downhill lie in the bunker and not much green to work with, he splashes ten feet, about the best he could do, then saves par with a sliding right-left putt. Harbinger of a rough day or confidence-boosting foundation for another low round? We’ll see.

Another birdie, this time in a more conventional style, for Viktor Hovland. The green found in regulation at 13, a 15-footer rolled in. He has -2 for his round and the championship. Also -2: Matt Fitzpatrick, who bounces back from the sloppy drop shot at 11 by hitting his second at 12 from three feet and sealing the deal.

PGA Champion Justin Thomas got off to a bad start this morning. From the center of the 10, he approached the thick rough and ended up running for a double bogey six. He then followed up with a bogey on the 11th. Suddenly, one of the pre-tournament favorites had dropped to +2. But a big break at 13 could have stopped that downward momentum. He hits too long a putt for birdie, but the ball crashes into the back of the cup, he thinks about walking away, but nails. Lucky he had that plumb line, because otherwise he’d face a returning ten-foot meter. Birdie out of nowhere, and returns to +1.

A couple of long birdie putts here. Brooks Koepka swings big left to right from the front 3, the two-time winner goes up to +2, while Shane Lowry whistles one from the front 10. He’s +1. And from long to big: MJ Daffue finds greenside sand on the manageable par-four fifth, jumps four feet and makes back-to-back birdies. He is the new sole leader of the US Open! Finally, a short missed by Matt Fitzpatrick at 11, and he drops back to -1.

-5: Dafu (5)
-4: Hadwin
-3: Tarren, Lingmerth, McIlroy, Dahmen
-2: Buckley, NeSmith, Harman, Wise, Fitzpatrick, Johnson (2*), Rose (1)

Sam Burns has won three times on the PGA Tour this season, and just in terms of recent form, he could be the next cab in the ranks to break his main duck. The 25-year-old from Louisiana opens with a birdie today, then adds another after nearly hitting the second par three. He is very well placed at -1. However, Viktor Hovland may have something to say about that, and the Norwegian steps in from thick rough at the side of 12 to join Burns at -1 after yesterday’s 70.

Adam Hadwin only plays this week as a substitute, having come through qualifying. He is benefiting from the retirement of Paul Casey. Four of the other five first-round leaders also qualify, with the exception of Rory McIlroy. Very strange. Very refreshing. However, could that speak to his chances of staying the course for four days? Well, maybe, except MJ Daffue just made 4 birdies to join Hadwin up front, and Brookline has been known to deliver the odd upset before, Francis Ouimet, all of that, so you never know!

-4: Daffo (4), Hadwin
-3: Tarren, Lingmerth, McIlroy, Dahmen

Adam Hadwin leads after his first round 66 …but the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland and defending champion Jon Rahm are in hot pursuit. This is what the top of the leaderboard looks like…

-4: Hadwin
