But the US scored the first individual victory when Roethlisberger beat Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane. That presaged a dominant performance from the host team.

Team USA claimed eight individual wins to post a 10-point win.

Former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz threw the best shot of the day. He deposited his tee shot on the par three 10th hole, just a few meters from the cup.

Smoltz scored a 3-up win over former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting due in part to shots like that. He was also marked with the putter.

Tate, Phelps, Gould, Michael Vick, Brice Butler and Michael Strahan joined Roethlisberger and Smoltz in winning the singles round. Gould had the largest margin of victory, outscoring former cricketer Brian Lara by 5 points.

Phelps was involved in perhaps the most stellar clash. He was 1 up on super middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez.

Having conquered the pool, perhaps the 23-time Olympic gold medalist should look for his tour card after going undefeated over two days.

Roethlisberger, who wears a 4 handicapIt was also excellent at Liberty National. Now that he’s retired, there’s likely a lot more golf ahead for the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback.
