Rowan Atkinson’s new comedy series Man Vs Bee has now arrived on Netflix and tells the story of a housekeeper who works in a luxury mansion.

When a bee gets into the house and refuses to come out, Atkinson’s character, Trevor, goes to any lengths to get it out, with disastrous consequences.

While the series is mostly set inside the house, a few additional locations were used, but where was the show filmed?

Is the luxury house real?

Unfortunately you won’t be able to visit the house featured in the series as all the interiors were created at Bovingdon Studios in Hertfordshire.

Production Designer Carly Reddin presented detailed initial designs with a total concept of what the house would look like, which was intended to invoke a sense of wonder and reflect the particular aesthetic of the couple, Nina and Christian.

Said Reddin, “We wanted them to have good taste. I was very influenced by contemporary American architecture, and Grant C Kirkpatrick in particular. He does a lot of Beverly Hills houses, including Jennifer Aniston’s house – big, open spaces with a lot of light and huge doors of glass. We needed it to look elegant, sophisticated and expensive.”

The team initially wanted to use an actual house, but due to destruction later in the series, they had to build the lower half at Bovingdon Studios in Hertfordshire. A green screen was used for the upper levels and four different gardens were used to represent the front and back.

Artwork was created specifically for the show by artist Humphrey Bangham, with the team drawing inspiration from Kandinsky and Mondrian. Meanwhile, the rest of the house was adorned with state-of-the-art furnishings, designed to fit the extravagant lifestyle of the home’s owners.

The expensive set was then destroyed as part of the series’ climax, with a single shot Reddin described as “distressing” and “sad”, but also “cathartic”.

Filming for the series took place over 12 weeks in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

In Hertfordshire, filming took place outside Halo Hearing Solutions and the high street butchers in Bovingdon, for later scenes in the series where Trevor ventures out of the house.

This was near Bovingdon Studios, where interior scenes were shot. Previous productions filmed at the studios include Bohemian Rhapsody, Justice League, and Midsomer Murders.

Meanwhile, in Buckinghamshire, filming took place in Aylesbury, located about half an hour’s drive from Bovingdon, where scenes were shot outside a police station.

What has Rowan Atkinson said about the filming of Man Vs Bee?

Atkinson recently told the British Comedy Guide that, as with his other film and television projects, he actually found shooting the show “horrible.”

He said: “It’s not a pleasant experience at all, it’s something you have to do to get to the end of the film and tell the story. I enjoy post-production; I’m always very involved with the editing and the music, sound and the sound mixing and all that. I’m very, very interested in being involved in all of that. And the pre-production, the whole development of the script…

“The meat in the sandwich is horrible. The pieces of bread on both sides are fine, before and after production, but the production is no fun at all.”
