Frenkie de Jong on Chelsea roster as they monitor Manchester United move | chelsea

Chelsea are following developments around Frenkie de Jong and could target the Barcelona midfielder if his move to Manchester United falls through.

United have agreed a €65m (£56.2m) fee plus add-ons for De Jong and negotiations now focus on the player’s personal terms. The Dutch international is understood to be keen to move to Old Trafford despite earlier claims that he is in no rush to leave Barcelona, who need to raise transfer money through sales.

However, De Jong is keen to play in the Champions League, which is currently not on offer at United. Chelsea, which remains in talks with Manchester City over Raheem Sterling and is waiting to see if Leeds United’s Raphinha will snub them for Barcelona, is watching the situation and could step in if the deal falls through.

Chelsea closely followed De Jong before he left Ajax for Barcelona in 2019 and Thomas Tuchel, the head coach, admires the 25-year-old. Whether Chelsea plans to follow up on interest from him remains to be seen, although a de Jong deal could prove easier than trying to buy Declan Rice from West Ham.

Chelsea’s main priority is to strengthen defense and attack, but there is also uncertainty about their options in midfield. Tuchel was widely chosen among Jorginho, N’Golo Kanté, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Saúl Ñíguez last season. Saúl has returned to Atlético de Madrid after his failed loan, and Jorginho and Kanté’s contract ends next summer.

With Tuchel intending to use Conor Gallagher after the England international’s impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace, another midfield addition could see Chelsea try to cash in on Jorginho or Kante. Jorginho could return to Serie A, with Juventus being a possible destination for the Italy midfielder. United have shown interest in Kanté and on Friday expected left-back Tyrell Malacia to sign him from Feyenoord after agreeing personal terms.

Chelsea are in talks with Juve about a big-money deal for Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. There is no agreement on a fee for De Ligt, who is unlikely to extend his contract, but Chelsea are willing to include Timo Werner or Christian Pulisic in any deal.

Tuchel must be reinforced in defense after the departures of Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen. Chelsea are making progress in talks with City to sign Nathan Aké, who could cost around £45m, and are back in talks with Sevilla for Jules Koundé.

Todd Boehly, Chelsea’s new co-owner, is leading negotiations over potential transfers and is determined to back Tuchel. Chelsea plan to strengthen their attack by signing Sterling, who could cost £50m, and have agreed a £55m fee plus add-ons with Leeds for Raphinha.

However, there is still no deal for Sterling with City and there are concerns that Raphinha could hold out for Barcelona to meet Leeds’ asking price. Barcelona’s financial problems have prevented him from making an offer for the Brazilian, but he could now have the funds to bid.

Chelsea offered Raphinha a five-year deal worth £115,000 a week. If they miss out on the 25-year-old, they could switch focus to Ousmane Dembélé, who is out of contract at Barcelona.
