open wheel/NASCAR pipeline seems to be active and booming once more as Jacques Villeneuve add a Daytona 500 to your resume and Kimi raikkonen prepares for her maiden cup series beginning. Now, daniil kvyat wants to join his partner Formula One alumni in stock cars.

Kvyat attended last weekend’s Cup race in Highway America as a guest of Team Hezbergwhich places the #27 Ford for Loris Hezmans and Villeneuve. A longtime fan of the sport, Kvyat previously stopped at Martinsville Expressway to put antennas and has driven a When Euro Series car, the last of which the EuroNASCAR PRO championship was won by Hezemans in 2021.

Speaking with FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass on Saturday, Kvyat confirmed that he has received NASCAR’s approval to race if he finds a vehicle, which he hopes to do in order to race a Cup event on a road course.

“This is a different world but very fascinating for me,” Kvyat told Pockrass. “I always really liked NASCAR and was very curious about it. I was actually in Martinsville last year to watch the race, now this year I came looking for opportunities to race here. I think something could come to life very soon, hopefully, and soon you’ll see it in a NASCAR Cup Series car.”

“We started talking to Josh (Reaume, Hezeberg Team Technical Partner) and his team a couple of months ago. It seemed like there was a chance here, they are willing to give me a chance here. It would be awesome to get a shot here in NASCAR, show my face here and thrive here, most importantly because obviously I want to speak up on the track and start getting experience here.

“I’m trying to see how the race weekend goes with the team, how the driver works, what is the amount of track time, those little details so it’s not a big surprise when it’s my turn to drive.

Kvyat raced in Formula One with Scuderia AlphaTauri Y red bull racing from 2014 to 2020, during which he earned two podium finishes and a championship best finish of seventh in 2017. He left the Red Bull organization after a fourteenth-place points finish with AlphaTauri in 2020 and became a reserve for alpine f1.

By 2022, he would debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship with G-Drive Racing before the FIA imposed sanctions on Russian entities and drivers for their country’s invasion of Ukraine. Kvyat spoke out against the conflict, but also described the FIA’s decisions, which included banning Russian drivers from racing under their country’s flag, as discriminatory and unfair. Many Russian drivers lost their seats in international series like other F1 competitors. Nikita Mazepinwhich has since changed to the off-roader.

While NASCAR is linked to the FIA through links ACCUS (United States Automobile Competition Committee), is a privately run sanctioning body that is not required to follow the decisions of the FIA. Additionally, nationalities do not carry a particularly significant weight in the US-based Cup Series compared to international events.

There are three more Cup road course races for Kvyat to target: Indianapolis Expressway on July 31, Watkins Glen International on August 21, and Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval October 9th. While those tracks are obvious to someone who grew up on road racing, he’s more than willing to do ovals.

“I think the most sensible idea would be to race on a normal track because that’s the one I’m most familiar with.he continued. “But of course one day I would like to do the show full time here. So it would be great to start getting experience on the ovals. I have a very open mind, I always like NASCAR a lot. One day, hopefully, I can do the full season and hopefully one day win it.”

If Kvyat is able to compete in 2022, the Cup Series will feature four F1 drivers when he joins Räikkönen and Villeneuve, as well as tarsus marquis, who is also aiming to make his debut at Watkins Glen. Also from the world of single-seaters, veterans of the IndyCar Series tony canaan, Marco AndrettiY Helio Castroneves have expressed interest in NASCAR, Kanaan is in negotiations to race two NASCAR road races, while Castroneves hopes to run the 2023 Daytona 500 as a reward for winning the SRX season opener in June. Former Formula 2 driver Matthew Nanni He is watching ARCA Menards Series competition.

Is it the 2000s again? Is another open car invasion coming our way?
