Chelsea: Five players who could leave the club with Todd Boehly targeting review

Everything has changed at Chelsea this summer under new ownership, and several players will nervously look over their shoulders until the market closes.

Thomas Tuchel is set to be heavily backed by Todd Boehly, shown by Romelu Lukaku, a staggering arrival of around £100m last summer, showing the exit door. He won’t be the only one to leave either, with the exodus underway.

In fact, next season the Blues are sure to feature a host of new names from the front to the back of their team. It emerged on Monday that Chelsea are considering signing Cristiano Ronaldo amid his uncertain future at Manchester United.

Last week, they also collapsed Arsenal’s bid to sign Raphinha from Leeds with a £60m offer, but the Brazilian is still waiting for Barcelona.

The Blues also want Raheem Sterling, and talks continue with Manchester City over a £55m deal. This new strike force has the potential to be deadly, but for this to happen, some current stars must be sold.

Among those at risk of being cut off are Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic, so here, sports mail take a closer look at the players whose future in the capital is in doubt…

TIMO WERNER

It just hasn’t worked out for Timo Werner at Chelsea, and there have been active attempts this summer to change him. What sports mail has revealed in recent weeks, the Blues have touted a possible swap deal for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.

That specific transaction seems unlikely as it stands, but the efforts to change it speak volumes. Last season, he impressed in fits and starts, but clearly hasn’t done enough to convince Tuchel and Boehly that he deserves a second chance.

He made 37 appearances last season, making 24 of those starts. A grand total of 2,317 minutes played resulted in 11 goals and eight assists. These tallies are far from nightmare material, but they are below the levels the club will demand of him.

Currently, there doesn’t seem to be a long queue of potential suitors for Werner, so it may well be a move to Turin or the failed ace going bankrupt.

HAKIM ZIYECH

Chelsea have been in talks with AC Milan over playmaker Hakim Ziyech, with the former Moroccan international set to be the next to make room for new signings.

Milan are understood to have had a long-term interest in Ziyech, and Tuchel is open for sale if the clubs can agree a fee. The star may also have to take a pay cut.

Reports in Italy claimed that the player even submitted a transfer request.

He moved to Stamford Bridge in 2020 under Frank Lampard, now Everton manager, but just two years into his five-year deal, Ziyech has grown unhappy with his lack of minutes and has now set his sights elsewhere. .

The Blues invested heavily to recruit Ziyech from Ajax, giving him a long-term contract and pitching him as an exciting addition to help their exciting project. But while he hasn’t entirely disappointed, a parting of ways is inevitable.

He has scored 14 goals in 83 games, but his below-average numbers may be a result of his limited playing time. He came off the bench in the league 13 times last year.

CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI

Last season was incredibly frustrating for Callum Hudson-Odoi. He did not feature for Chelsea on March 2, when the team beat Luton Town in an FA Cup tie, and even then he played just 62 minutes. His career needs a change of course.

In the preseason, it seems like he’s doing everything he can to make that happen. He is being tested in ‘brutal’ training sessions, according to reports, as he tries to get back into shape before the Blues’ schedule goes into full swing.

However, it is unclear if he will still be at the club at the start of the season.

His role has diminished under Tuchel, especially in his preferred position, and Hudson-Odoi may well decide that now is the perfect time for a new challenge.

It is worth remembering that just two years ago a transfer to Bayern Munich was blocked, and then he signed a new contract to stay at Chelsea. This level of interest doesn’t just fade, so expect there to be several clubs fluttering around.

CHRISTIAN PULISIC

What sports mail has revealed, talks between Chelsea and Juventus have resumed over a potential swap deal involving Christian Pulisic plus cash for Matthijs De Ligt.

In recent days, it emerged that the Old Lady would prioritize a deal for the winger over his Blues team-mate Werner, even though he is also being discussed.

AC Milan have also been monitoring the situation of the striker, who has been frustrated by his lack of opening with Tuchel. The Italian teams were initially hoping to see if Chelsea would be open to a sale, and that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Pulisic arrived at Stamford Bridge for £58m in 2019, but neither Juventus nor AC Milan would be able to match the fee and would seek a cut-price deal instead.

While on international duty with the US, he was able to address his future by speaking to reporters, admitting he wants “to get more playing time.”

“I want to be on the pitch as much as I can and be as ready as possible and fit as well,” he added, hinting at his ambitions to take on a bigger role next season.

Last season, his father, Mark, pointed to his son’s lack of minutes and described his situation as ‘sad’. It may be in the interests of all sides, then, for Pulisic to move on.

jorginho

A decision on Jorginho’s future may also need to be made this summer. He has been heavily linked with a move to Italy, and only has 12 months left on his contract. Having allowed him to weaken, could the midfielder be tempted to move on?

Various reports have claimed that Juventus sporting director Federico Cherubini has already traveled to London to start talks with Chelsea about signing the Euro 2020 winner, with a “positive relationship” with the player and his team formed.

Therefore, there is much talk about a possible exit, and the Blues may well see this window as the perfect time to allow him to return to his homeland. This would also allow them to bring in aspiring stars, whether local or from abroad.

What is clear is that the former Ballon d’Or candidate no longer considers himself untouchable. He’s still a classy performer, but Tuchel and Boehly, in their attempts to breathe new life into their ranks at the club, are apparently happy to get rid of him.

Jorginho, a former Ballon d'Or nominee, is reportedly keen to return to Italy this summer.
